The ever vibrant Eugene Domingo won people’s choice favorite actress award for her portrayal in Marlon Rivera’s “Ang Babae sa Septic tank” and theatre veteran Shamaine Centenera- Buencamino won Best Supporting Actress, for Loy Arcena’s “Niño.”
Domingo as joined on stage by Andy Lau who won people’s choice favorite actor. She bravely handed her Iphone to chair Wilfred Wong to take their photo and told Lau, “Andy, you must kiss me. I waited 25 years for this.” It was such a funny scene to watch while others dropped jaw when Andy really kissed Domingo.
The last time we won in AFA was in 2009 when Gina Pareño won best supporting actress in Brillante Mendoza’s “Serbis.” And we scored again this year, bringing home another pride to the Philippines.
Domingo’s speech was dedicated to her alma mater, the University of the Philippines Diliman, where she took up theatre arts. The audience applauded her long speech. Domingo turned to Lau and quipped, “Andy, let’s do a movie together.” Her guts brought the house down.
As for Buencamino, her speech was emotional and heart-felt. Her husband Nonie Buencamino also an actor, was seated in the audience and was tearful when she dedicated her victory to him and their four children. Buencamino almost wasn’t able to attend AFA since she said that she is unemployed at the start of 2012 and might not be able to afford the trip. It was her first time in Hong Kong and I believe that it will be a first of many.
Domingo and Buencamino, both from UP Diliman’s Theatre arts and also winners from last year’s Cinemalaya Festival believe that Theatre actors should be built up and that people should also believe in their talent because they can also cross over to Film and TV.
Domingo who was just there to present an award said that she is ready to go home empty-handed, “I wanted to win, too. This recognition will make our Asian neighbors more aware of Filipino artists. I am very thankful.”
