It’s getting more than what we pay for: The Hunger Games Movie Review

The Hunger Games movie surely exceeded every fans expectation. With Gary Ross’s directorship and the casts' superb acting (Jennifer Lawrence is so awesome) The Hunger Games (book) came to life.

I’m very pleased to say that the movie was very good. It all matched what I read, though there are some alterations in the story, it didn’t affected the flow of it, instead it made it more lucid and clear for some of the people who watched it already but hadn’t read the book.

If you don’t know the story, it’s about a world (our world) after a great war in which the people rebelled against the Capitol. The country is now divided into twelve districts plus the Capitol so that the latter can maintain control of the former. In the Capitol, life is easy and you get everything you want, all based on the services provided by the districts.

The movie as the book does, begins with Katniss Everdeen on the day of the Reaping and follows through her story through the invariable government manipulation of The Hunger Games. Jennifer Lawrence brings the character to life, giving us her internal monologue without having to say a word. There is no narration of her thoughts but her performance is so strong there doesn’t need to be.

There is no performance in the movie that I can say fell out of place. Each and every actor portrayed their roles really well adding spice and excitement to the story. Looking to the trailer of the film, I was really convinced by the portrayal of Woody Harrelson (plays Haymitch Abernathy) His role was so complex but it is so likeable, though he has limited scenes in the movie. He embodied the Haymitch Abernathy that we all liked in the series. Elizabeth Banks and Stanley Tucci (Effie Trinket and Caesar Flickerman) brought a much  funny twist with their acting and somewhat annoying yet cool outfits (but that’s what really Capitol people look like) Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth (as Peeta Mellark and Gale Hawthorne respectively) stepped up their games and brought up their hotness that almost all the THG girl fans wished they were Katniss. In addition to, Amandla Stenberg (Rue) made almost all the audience cry (including me) because of the death of her character.

Meanwhile, let’s talk about the “Love Triangle” thingy going on in the movie. It’s so obvious how Josh Hutcherson (Peeta Mellark) showed his love by doing everything just to keep Katniss alive and also staying true to himself.  On the other hand, Liam Hemsworth (Gale Hawthorne) surely proved to us that he also love Katniss. There are scenes that show Gale’s jealousy towards the star-crossed lover thing going on between Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) Fans will surely create their own Hunger Games just to win the hearts of these two lovely gentlemen.

The film will keep viewers as well as readers at the edge of their seats. With the right amount of suspense, action, drama and ROMANCE, the movie will leave you smitten and enthralled with this awesome treat.

The Hunger Games is not just an ordinary book or a movie. It’s a reflection of our world. The masses suffer while the few live in preposterous riches. The Capitol of Panem has more than enough to spare, as do the mega celebs of our days. We have hungry and homeless, we have people who live in sub-human conditions. This is a story about greed and about turning a blind eye.

But on the lighter side, the movie is really great. Every fan should watch it. Like what Ms. Kris Aquino said in one of her TV commercials, “It’s SULIT.” It is getting more than what we really pay for.

Good review. Maybe The Hunger Games is going to be the one young adult franchise that really lives up to the hype. Thankfully, it’s no Twilight- meaning that future installments will actually be something to look forward to and there won’t be any mopey romance angles. Fancy that! Check out my review when you can.
