Happy Hunger Games!

Amidst wizardry and pale looking vampires, a new enthralling story is unleashed. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is now making its way to the hearts of the people around the world. The story revolves around the girl named Katniss Everdeen.  In order to protect her younger sister, she took her sister’s place in the most deadly and cruelest game in Panem, “The Hunger Games.”

The Hunger Games, is an annual game where each district has to name two tributes (these are 24 children that will fight to death in the game) one girl and one boy from ages 12 to 18. The tributes are chosen by a process called “Reaping” it is a type of lottery where all the names of each and every child in every district that is in legal age is drawn. Peeta Mellark, the boy tribute who had love Katniss since they were little is on the edge of killing her first and last love.

Supposedly due to Katniss and Peeta's beloved image in the minds of the audience as "star-crossed lovers", a rule change is announced midway through the Games, stating that two tributes from the same district can win the Hunger Games as a pair. This rule caused a huge change in the flow of the games. Katniss finds Peeta and nurses him back to health. The two were able to rest in a small cave and there happened the most moment in Peeta’s life. Together with Peeta, they were able to compete with their fellow tributes. When the couple is finally the last two tributes, the Gamemakers reverse the rule change in an attempt to force them into a dramatic finale, where one must kill the other to win. Katniss, knowing that the Gamemakers would rather have two victors than none, retrieves highly poisonous berries known as "Nightlock" from her pouch and offers some to Peeta. Upon realizing that Katniss and Peeta intend to commit suicide, the Gamemakers announce that both will be the victors of the 74th Hunger Games. The Capitol is not happy with the drama that made Peeta and Katniss as victors. As soon as the game ended, the Capitol considers Katniss a rebel and what she did was an act of defiance.

Suzanne Collins inspiration came from channel surfing on television. On one channel she observed people competing on a reality show and on another she saw footage of the invasion of Iraq. The two "began to blur in this very unsettling way" and the idea for the book was formed.

This novel is way different than any other fictional books we had read before. Though it also involves love against all odds, it doesn’t just stop there. It also tackles issues like severe poverty, starvation, oppression, and the effects of war among others. The book deals with the struggle for self-preservation that the people of Panem face in their districts and the Hunger Games in which they must participate. The starvation and need for resources that the citizens encounter both in and outside of the arena create an atmosphere of helplessness that the main characters try to overcome in their fight for survival.

The book will leave every reader smitten by the way it was written. Katniss’s courage and bravery is such an endearing trait to have. Her love for her family will surely touch each and everyone’s heart.

This novel is a trilogy, Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay.

The book is now a motion picture that will be shown on millions of theatres worldwide.

“May the odds be ever in your favor!”
