Charice’s new image, her coming out of the closet?

My partner and I were at the Big Dome (now Smart Araneta after Manny Pangilinan bought it) for Charice’s Infinity Concert Tour three Friday’s back and we got surprised because we experienced more than what we paid for.

It was the first time that Charice, Filipino pride and now international recording artist and TV star, got to perform her own major concert in the Big Dome. Backed by Iyaz (International recording artist and featured in Charice’s first international single “Pyramid”) and her co-finalists at “Little Big Star” where she was first discovered, the audience expected a lot for her major baptism of fire.

Unlike from what we’ve expected, Smart Araneta was not filled. A bit disappointing for Charice’s first time. The show was almost 30 minutes late too.

Madrigal siblings from “Pilipinas Got Talent” opened the show with a blast. They were all dressed in yellow and belted powerful songs that really got the audience in mood and very excited.

When they dim the lights, we all know that Charice is going to pop out from the stage and turn the spectators into pandemonium. Little that we knew, it would really be lot of shock. When she sang the lines “Turn on the lights now,” the ray of lights flickered and played on the ceiling and on the walls. One strum of drum cued the lights to finally set to spotlight. And then the new Charice was revealed. Everybody shout to what seemed to be a riot. She was sporting a new hairstyle - New cut, new color. Yes, you all know now, she was blonde.

In the middle of her singing she said that she actually got the idea from her brother Carl’s favorite Final fantasy Character, Lightning.

On the other hand, many thought of it as coming out. Before the concert, there have already been rumors that Charice is a lesbian and is in a relationship with her American personal assistant. Though in her press release, she didn’t really admit nor denied it. She said more of like, “this is me, and this is how I want to myself to be. I’m tired of hiding who I really am. I hope you understand and accept me.” Well, she didn’t say a lot but we can read between the lines.

Charice, as I believed gave her best in performing in front of her Filipino fans. I wasn’t just impressed on how she presented herself as a Filipina speaking English so slangy. She would speak really fast not minding if her audience understood her and she’d go on laughing like she’s nuts. I mean what the eff is that? It wasn’t cool. She appeared to me as trying hard. I could have been prouder if she spoke in Filipino.

She sang her new songs and do her own rendition of Bieber’s “Baby”. She also did a tribute to her dad and sang “Line to Heaven.”

For her Finale, She sang her new single “Louder” and went out the stage.

The lights were dimmed and we knew the Concert is over. But then her band played a familiar melody, and before we knew it Charice was again on stage doing a tribute for her idol Whitney Houston and singing “I will always love you.”

It was an amazing night. We went home knowing that Charice is finally doing her own thing now and because of that, she’ll be more ready to lift her own bar higher.
